Tips for a Small Thanksgiving

Planning to celebrate Thanksgiving this year with a smaller group? While we are not strangers to the idea of social distancing, it seems a little strange to have a smaller group for Thanksgiving instead of the traditional huge family gathering. However, you don't have to let the idea smaller group deter you from having a decadent and delicious dinner or put a halt to the traditions you love on this holiday of gratitude. Here are some tips for having a small Thanksgiving:

1. You don't have to buy a whole turkey.

Consider picking up a skin-on, bone-in turkey breast instead. It's recommended to have about one and half pounds of turkey per person (more if you want leftovers). Alternatively, you can opt to have a small roast chicken or individual Cornish game hens. Everything can still be sliced on a carving board for that traditional effect, and you won't have the hassle of roasting an entire turkey and the insane amount of leftovers that'll come with it.

2. Chill on the sides and desserts.

Is it just me, or are all Thanksgiving recipes made to feed a small village? While I admit that leftovers are one of the best things about this food-based holiday, it doesn't have the same effect when the amount of leftovers you have would feed you for months...and months. A good way to have an appropriate amount of food the day-of (and leftover) is to limit the number of things you're making. I personally suggest choosing 2-3 of your favorites sides (or your guest's favorites) and one dessert and sticking to that. *Pro tip: read the serving sizes of your recipes and adjust them according to how many mouths it will be feeding.

3. It can still be festive and special.

Don't skip on your favorite traditions just because the group is smaller. Put out your special dishes, linens, and cutlery. Add festive floral arrangements and decorative squash. Utilize the time you're saving by not having to cook for so many people and invest more energy into the details. Maybe add a festive ready-to-drink cocktail for after dinner, or create new traditions with games. Appreciate the intimacy of the smaller group.
